What is Hammertoe?
A hammertoe occurs when the first joint of the toe bends in an abnormal manner, often resembling an upside-down V when the toe is viewed from the side. When this happens, it puts pressure on the toe, causing problems to develop. Common problems that occur as a result of hammertoes include:
Pain or irritation of the affected toe when wearing shoes.
The development of CORNS.
The development of CALLOUSES.
A hammertoe is formed due to an abnormal balance of the muscles in the toes. This abnormal balance causes increased pressures on the tendons and joints of the toe, leading to its contracture. Heredity and trauma can also lead to the formation of a hammertoe. Arthritis is another factor, because the balance around the toe in people with arthritis is so disrupted that a hammertoe may develop. Wearing shoes that are too tight and cause the toes to squeeze can also be a cause for a hammertoe to form.
What is the treatment for Hammertoe?
The first step in alleviating the pain of a hammertoe is to wear more comfortable shoes. Shoes should have plenty of room in the toe area, both in height and width.
A hammertoe that is the cause of chronic pain may require surgery to correct the misalignment. During surgery, the contracted toe joints will be loosened to relieve pressure and allow the toe to align properly.
A hammertoe cannot be treated with devices such as hammertoe crests and hammertoe splints. These devices cannot straighten a hammertoe. Gel toe shields, gel toecaps and other types of padding can provide palliative relief for corns on a temporary basis.
