Pes planus, commonly known as flat feet, occurs when the foot's arch does not develop or collapses, leading to the entire sole touching the floor. Children typically have flat feet, and their arch develops as they grow into toddlerhood. It usually suffices for podiatrists to provide shoe advice for the majority of kids who have this condition. However, for kids with hypermobility or hypotonia, further intervention might be required. Flat feet typically emerge as the infant's fat pad recedes and motor skills progress, but sometimes arch development is impeded by factors such as calf muscle tightness or ligament hypermobility. While flat feet often do not trouble children, they can eventually cause gait changes, clumsiness, or pain. Early treatment is important to prevent these types of issues. If your child has flat feet that are causing problems, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for appropriate treatment.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot and Ankle Center. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Embarking on a running journey brings not just the thrill of the track but also the responsibility of safeguarding against potential injuries. Start with a proper warm-up, gradually transitioning from brisk walking to a light jog, allowing muscles to adapt to the forthcoming activity. Choosing the right footwear is paramount. Opt for shoes that provide adequate support and cushioning based on your foot arch and running terrain. Maintain a balanced training routine that incorporates strength and flexibility exercises, focusing on core muscles and leg stability. Listen to your body and incorporate rest days to allow for recovery and muscle repair. Pay attention to running surfaces, choosing softer terrains when possible to reduce the impact on joints. Lastly, progress your running intensity gradually to avoid overexertion. If you would like more information about how to prevent running injuries in addition to protecting the feet, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist.

All runners should take extra precaution when trying to avoid injury. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot and Ankle Center. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

There are a lot of mistakes a runner can make prior to a workout that can induce injury. A lot of athletes tend to overstretch before running, instead of saving those workouts for a post-run routine. Deep lunges and hand-to-toe hamstring pulls should be performed after a workout instead of during a warmup. Another common mistake is jumping into an intense routine before your body is physically prepared for it. You should try to ease your way into long-distance running instead of forcing yourself to rush into it.

More Tips for Preventing Injury

  • Incorporate Strength Training into Workouts - This will help improve the body’s overall athleticism
  • Improve and Maintain Your Flexibility – Stretching everyday will help improve overall performance
  • “Warm Up” Before Running and “Cool Down” Afterward – A warm up of 5-10 minutes helps get rid of lactic acid in the muscles and prevents delayed muscle soreness
  • Cross-Training is Crucial
  • Wear Proper Running Shoes
  • Have a Formal Gait Analysis – Poor biomechanics can easily cause injury

Pain Management for Bunions in Runners

Bunions are bony protrusions that form at the base of the big toe due to prolonged stress on the metatarsophalangeal joint. Detecting them is relatively straightforward through visual inspection, often supplemented by X-rays to assess their severity. For runners, bunions can pose significant challenges, exacerbated by poorly fitting running shoes. Many running shoes, characterized by tapered toe boxes and raised heels, can contribute to bunion development over time. Treatment options range from the simple act of changing shoes and employing pain management techniques, such as medication, to using toe spacers and performing bunion massages. If conservative approaches fall short, surgical intervention may be an option, although it is not always a permanent fix. If you are a runner and have a bunion that is causing you pain, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist to discuss pain management techniques that might help you.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot and Ankle Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Egg Harbor Township, NJ . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Laser Treatment for Toenail Fungus

Laser treatment for toenail fungus has emerged as an innovative approach to tackling this persistent and often stubborn condition. This non-invasive procedure involves using focused laser beams to target and eradicate the fungal infections that reside beneath the toenail. The laser energy penetrates the nail plate, reaching the affected area without causing harm to the surrounding healthy tissue. The heat generated by the laser effectively kills the fungus, offering a promising alternative to traditional treatments such as oral medications or topical solutions. Multiple sessions may be required for optimal results. However many individuals find laser treatment appealing due to its minimal side effects and the absence of the potential liver complications associated with oral medications. Understanding this procedure provides individuals with valuable insights into a contemporary and effective solution for addressing toenail fungus and restoring clear, healthy nails. If you have developed toenail fungus and would like detailed information about this type of treatment, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

Laser treatment can be an effective way to get rid of toenail fungus. If you have any questions about laser treatment, consult with one of our podiatrists from Foot and Ankle Center. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality treatment for fungal nails.

What Are Toenail Fungal Infections?

Onychomycosis, or fungal infection of the nail, is a relatively common and non-serious condition. Around 10 percent of U.S. citizens are afflicted with fungal nails. Common forms of fungus that infect the nail include dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungal Infections Include:

  • Nail thickening
  • Brittleness of the nail
  • Discoloration of the nail

Diagnosis for Fungal Nails

Fungal infections are diagnosed by fungal culture and microscopy. This will rule out any other conditions such as nail trauma, psoriasis, lichen planus, and onychogryphosis.

What Is Laser Treatment?

Laser treatment is a non-invasive, safe, quick, and painless procedure that uses the heat from a laser to kill fungus in the nail. Each infected nail is targeted with a laser for several minutes. The treatment is usually utilized several different times over a select period. During this time, a podiatrist will keep an eye on the infection.
